Your ultimate guide to passing Fahes the first time.

A full preparation checklist distilled from the official Fahes guidance. Tick each item before you drive to the inspection lane.

The 48-point full Fahes pre inspection checklist

Walk through every item in the order shown. Cars that fail Fahes the first time usually miss at least three of these basics.

0 / 48 checked
  1. Under chassis cleanliness

The under chassis must be reasonably clean and not sprayed with oil. Anti rust oil coatings hide leaks and get flagged.

  2. Additions need prior approval

Some additional fittings and modifications need the Traffic Department's approval before being fitted.

  3. Electrical wiring

All wiring must be safe, properly mounted and insulated. Loose or chafing wires fail the inspection.

  4. Tires

All tires must be safe, of compatible size and construction type, without excessive wear or damage.

  5. Wheel fixings

Nuts, bolts and studs must all be present, safe and effective. A single missing or loose lug nut is a fail.

  6. Wheels

Wheels must be safe, appropriate to the vehicle, and without excessive damage or buckling.

  7. Spare tire mounting

The spare is not tested for condition, but where fitted it must be securely mounted in its carrier.

  8. Fire extinguishers

Where fitted, fire extinguishers must be suitable, accessible, mounted and in good safe condition. Trucks and semi trailers must carry at least one.

  9. Vehicle lights and switches

All lights and switches must be operational and in good safe working order. Additional LED spotlights may need Traffic Department approval before fitting.

  10. Headlights and beam aim

Headlights must work and be aimed so they do not dazzle oncoming drivers when on dipped beam.

  11. Horns

The horn must be in good working condition and audible.

  12. Front wipers

Front wipers must work and clear water effectively from the windshield without streaks or torn blades.

  13. Mirrors

All mirrors must be present, intact and in good safe working condition.

  14. Reverse horn (commercial)

Commercial vehicles over 3,000 kg GVW must have an operational reverse warning horn.

  15. Amber beacon warning lights

Amber beacons are required on fuel and irrigation tankers, breakdown recovery trucks, and any vehicle or trailer wider than 2.6 m.

  16. Battery mounting

The battery must be safe and securely mounted with clean terminals. Loose batteries fail on fire and short circuit risk.

  17. Brakes meet legal efficiency

All brakes must be safe and meet the minimum legal efficiency on the roller dynamometer.

  18. ABS not checked

ABS functions themselves are not checked, but a dashboard ABS warning light staying on may be flagged at the visual stage.

  19. Body and bumpers

Excessive bodywork damage can cause failure at the legal inspection. Trucks, trailers and buses must carry reflective tape on their steel rear bumpers per Traffic Department requirement.

  20. Hoods and bonnet

Hoods must be in safe operating condition and capable of opening and closing securely. Worn safety catches or broken primary latches fail.

  21. Chassis damage

Excessive damage to chassis parts can cause failure at the inspection.

  22. Doors

All doors must be in a safe working condition and close securely without popping open on bumps.

  23. Door handles

Door handles must be available, complete and in good working condition both inside and out.

  24. Windows and glass

All glass must be safe, suitable and without excessive damage in the driver's field of view.

  25. Safety belts

All front safety belts must be accessible and in good safe working condition. Belt modifications may need Traffic Department approval before fitting.

  26. Seats

Seats must be in a good safe working condition. Aftermarket racing seats may need Traffic Department approval.

  27. Major modifications need approval

All major modifications and alterations must be approved by the Traffic Department before the test.

  28. Mud guards (heavy vehicles)

Heavy vehicles must have operational wheel housings or mud guards on the rear wheels.

  29. Side under run protection

Commercial vehicles over 3,000 kg GVW must have approved side bumpers fitted with yellow ECE R104 C class reflective tape per Traffic Department requirement.

  30. Rear red reflectors

All vehicles and trailers must have approved rear red reflectors. Trailers specifically require triangle shaped reflectors.

  31. Shock absorbers

Shock absorbers must be safe and effective. Worn shocks that let the car bounce after a single push fail the test.

  32. Suspension

Suspension must be in a good safe working condition without excessive damage. Modifications may need Traffic Department approval before fitting.

  33. Exhaust emissions

Exhaust emissions must meet the minimum legal CO and HC limits at the tailpipe probe.

  34. Exhaust pipes and silencers

Exhaust pipes and silencers must be in good and safe working condition. Modified exhausts may need Traffic Department approval before fitting.

  35. Engines

Engines must be safe, operational and not dripping oil. Modified power outputs may need Traffic Department approval before fitting.

  36. Transmissions

Transmissions must be safe, operational and not dripping oil.

  37. Oil leaks

No excessive or continuous oil leaks are permitted from any system.

  38. Fuel caps

Fuel caps must be safe, sealed and secure with a working tether and intact gasket.

  39. Fuel systems

The full fuel system must be safe with no leaks or improper repairs from tank to engine.

  40. Paint and color

Excessive paintwork damage can cause failure at the legal inspection. A change of paint color requires Traffic Department approval before painting.

  41. License plates

License plates must be available and in good readable condition to pass the legal inspection.

  42. Vehicle identification number (VIN)

Trucks and trailers registered after 01.04.2015 must carry the Qatar Traffic Department chassis number plate. Tampering with or altering any VIN plates is not allowed.

  43. Tinted windows

Additional tints beyond the factory level need Traffic Department approval before fitting.

  44. Steering wheel covers

Steering wheel covers must be safe, securely fitted and in good condition without loose or missing parts.

  45. Drive shafts

Drive shafts must be in a safe working condition without play or damage.

  46. Accelerators

The accelerator pedal and linkage must be in safe working condition.

  47. Air bags (SRS systems)

Tampering with airbags or SRS components is not allowed. Removing an airbag or capping its wiring fails the test.

  48. Steering wheel (general)

The steering wheel must be safe, smooth and without excessive modifications. Modified steering wheels may need Traffic Department approval before fitting.

The full Fahes preparation guide

Fahes inspections in Qatar test your vehicle against road safety and legal standards before the Istimara is renewed. The checks below cover the items that most commonly cause first time fails and the basics that take less than an hour to verify at home. Cars that walk into the lane with these items in order almost always pass on the first attempt and avoid the re test fee.

Mechanical and safety systems

The mechanical pass covers brakes, suspension, steering, tires, wheels, drive shafts, exhaust, engine and transmission. Brakes are measured on a roller dynamometer against the legal minimum, and the handbrake is tested against a slope simulator. Shock absorbers get a bounce test at each corner, and worn ones that let the car keep bouncing fail. Tires need legal tread depth, matching sizes per axle, and no sidewall damage. Engines and transmissions must not drip oil, and the under chassis should be free of fresh oil sprays. Exhaust emissions are sampled at the tailpipe for carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons and must clear the minimum legal threshold.

Body, doors, glass and cabin

The body pass covers bodywork, paint, doors, door handles, hoods, mirrors, glass, wipers, seats, seatbelts and airbags. Excessive bodywork damage is a failure and color changes from the factory specification need Traffic Department approval before painting. Doors and bonnets must open and close securely, and the bonnet safety catch must hold. All front seatbelts must extend, retract and lock under load. Front seats must lock into position, and any airbag tampering, including non original steering wheels that cover the airbag or wiring that has been capped, results in a failure. Front wipers must clear water effectively and the driver's view through the windscreen must be free of cracks. Aftermarket window tints need approval.

Legal, identity and modifications

The legal pass covers items that have to match the Traffic Department's record on the Istimara: paint color, modifications, license plates, chassis number and VIN. Trucks and trailers first registered after 01.04.2015 must carry the Qatar Traffic Department chassis number plate at the time of inspection. Any tampering with VIN plates, ground down digits or swapped plates results in a failure and a referral to the Traffic Department. Modifications that need prior approval include engine swaps, raised power outputs, suspension changes, modified exhausts, LED light bar installations, dark window tints, custom steering wheels, racing seats and any change of color. Get the approval before fitting the modification, not after. Commercial vehicles over 3,000 kg GVW also need a reverse horn, side under run protection with yellow ECE R104 C reflective tape, and an approved fire extinguisher on board.

After the checklist, head to the lane

Drive to the Fahes lane during off peak hours to skip the queue. Bring a paper copy of your Istimara and insurance certificate in case the online lookup is slow. If the car fails on any item, the inspection report tells you exactly what to fix and you have thirty days to return for a free re test on the same items. Most cars that walk in with this checklist completed pass on the first attempt.
